On Monday we had another round of appointments. The first was with Dr. Susan Hintz, the neonatologist. She spoke with us a long time about how they will stabilize the baby once she is born and what to expect from birth to surgery. She also gave us a tour of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This was once again very difficult but it is good to see and gives us an idea of what to expect.
We then had another heart rate monitoring for the baby and she looked great. Our last appointment was with the OB. The current plan is to wait till Monday when they will do another ultrasound to check if the baby is growing. If she is not growing, they will induce next week. If she is growing they will wait till the week of March 26th and induce. Either way, she will be born in the next two weeks!
The other news that we received this morning is that we now have a room at the Ronald McDonald house a few blocks from the the hospital. We will move there tomorrow.

Was glad to hear that you will be closer to the hospital - and that although the surgery will be a very difficult one, the survival rate and the chance of long-term health is so high. I am sending you lots of love and am so anticipating the birth of your little one.

Next time I make it to a church I'll light candles for the mother ship, Christopher, the nut, Dr Hanley, Dr Hintz, the nurses, the social worker and all the others (perhaps I can get a bulk rate). So happy to hear that you have a room at RMH, that will make things easier. It was a haven for us. As for the NICU, ask within the first day or two who the primary nurse will be. That will help with communications. We have very fond memories of the NICU nurses. They are wonderful. The NICU itself can feel like a very noisy, chaotic place, but they are very good at what they do and really "see" the baby behind all the monitors and lines. Also, since parents are not allowed to be present during rounds, and the residents change often, it can be very helpful to speak with attending neonatologist at least once a day to clarify plans for the day. I got back from from 5 months in Brazil today and was checking in to see how you're all doing. So glad to hear that you've got such a super prognosis! Sounds like you're in great hands.
I used to be a phlebotomist & worked in all types of ICU's; don't be scared of any of it; all the equipment & tubes & smells & beeps will seem very routine soon. Think of it as "yours" - it is all there to help your baby.
I am still sending best wishes every day at dusk! (but now they should be arriving on Pacific Standard Time.) Can't wait to hear the good news. love, k

it is good to know you at a place, where they take care for the baby.....and the grown-ups as well. We are sending lots of love to you and the little one. Tell her, spring, and esp. March is a good time to see, hear and feel the outside-mom world.
